Who writes this thing?

That would be me, Andy Jacob. I’m an Oregon resident of almost 15 years, via New York City, Philadelphia, the Bay Area, and (originally) rural Virginia. My twin teenagers have attended Portland Public Schools since kindergarten. Professionally, I’ve spent the last two decades working to give all kids the kinds of educational opportunities I got from my local public schools. I’ve taught high school math, worked inside the bureaucracy of one of the nation’s largest school systems, and currently lead external relations for a national education nonprofit1 — so I’ve seen the education system, warts and all, from almost every angle.
